Internet marketing and web trends

One of the most important things for internet marketers to understand is the importance of web trends. The usual seasonal trends are well known such as Christmas, Valentines, Halloween, St Patricks day etc but I want to tell you about the other less visible trends that are shaping the internet.

My recent visit to Sri Lanka’s brand spanking new Lean Luxury hotel right in the centre of Colombo was highlighted by my visit to the roof top bar at the 26th floor is Colombo’s highest watering hole for the moment. Colombo looks amazing when seen from such a height. What is most visible are the road supplying traffic all over Colombo and the large skyscrapers built and being built. The reads are the lifeblood of the city giving it that spark of life that it would not be able to exist without. Web trends are similar they are common keywords or search terms that a large number of people are looking for that eventually create there own small network of articles, websites, blogposts and forum posts – it is very interesting to see how this evolution takes place – how something in society’s subconscious or collective unconscious mind to quote Jung comes bubbling up to the surface.

To the internet marketer are of paramount importance because the determine what the web will become not what it is now. Focusing on the future is one of the key success factors of very good internet marketers. Ability to predict what customer will want one year from now or five years is critical as this give the marketer the first mover advantage to reap a significant price premium.

Understanding Social Media and Share-ability

The web is now increasingly being driven by social media sites such as Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest etc this indicates a very important shift in focus of the web from being an information resource to creating greater social awareness by sharing common experiences. Probably the next stage of web evolution would be using a new media to share emotions directly to create an emotional connection among small group of persons with common interest or influencing a larger group using more advanced techniques.

ADHD and Web Shareability

In an era where things are evolving very fast and people’s attention has been diverted into hundred different directions being able to get the message out quickly in a way that creates strong emotional connection with the customer is of great importance and this has to an extent been done successfully by the use of info graphics and use of images or pictures rather than the written word.

Shareability or going viral is of great importance for a marketer because its a low cost method of getting free publicity. Usually moving images, videos and picture go viral much faster than the written word such as ebooks or articles. So a marketers main emphasis should be on creating content with the intention of it going viral. Creating viral content isn’t easy but takes a lot of patience since its an art – but picky backing on something that’s already viral is a science – so long as you do it tastefully you can get a lot of attention by picky back viral tactics.

Action Plan

Go visit site such as Google Trends, Alexa, Forums, Buzzfeed, social networks etc and check out what’s the latest trends are for your particular niche and create content preferably  content that has the ability to go viral. Review your niche periodically for changes in trends and try to predict changes in buyers psyche in terms of emotional reference points for the products and services being offered.
